Nose Aesthetics (Rhinoplasty)
Nose surgeries are performed after health problems or aesthetic concerns. It is possible to categorize health problems under two groups
1. Structural disorders in the nose
Structural disorders in the nose prevent the person from breathing properly and the nose loses its ability to fulfill this function. These possible problems significantly affect the quality of life of the person. These conditions may be genetic or may occur due to narrowing or blockage of the air ducts as a result of causes such as trauma.
2. Deformities in the nose
Similarly, deformities in the nose can be caused by genetic reasons, but can also be seen as a result of bumps, falls or similar traumas, burns or various diseases. It is also possible for deformities to cause psychological problems. Rhinoplasty provides partial or complete solution to these problems.
Nose surgeries performed for aesthetic reasons
Those who want to have a nose surgery (Rhinoplasty) for aesthetic reasons usually request that their nose shapes, which they think are not suitable for their facial structures, be changed to the shape they want. In fact, although the patient’s request is taken into consideration before the rhinoplasty operation, the physician should be the main factor in choosing the right shape with his experience and medical knowledge. The physician will make the choice that will look both aesthetically beautiful and surgically correct by taking the patient’s opinion.
In general, those who want to physically resemble popular people in the society refer to this person by applying for plastic surgery. Since the nose is one of the most important points in facial aesthetics, these requests are very common in nose surgeries. In these requests, the physician’s attitude should be to determine whether the patient really needs this aesthetics and, if necessary, to discourage the patient from this operation. However, if there is a situation that really affects the aesthetic appearance of the person or prevents him/her from feeling good, rhinoplasty is performed.
The shape of the nose is selected with the proportions determined according to the structure of the face after the measurements. Although the nose is located in the center of the face, it is actually an organ that is expected not to attract attention. When we speak face to face, we communicate by looking at the eyes and lips of the other person, we do not look at the nose. This situation shows us that the nose should be in a way that should not attract attention. For this reason, the aim of rhinoplasty will be to achieve a natural-looking result suitable for the facial structure.
Who Can Have Nose Aesthetics?
Rhinoplasty is an operation that can be performed after the end of the person’s developmental age. The nose must take its final shape and for this reason, development must be completed. In addition, the psychological aspect of this development is also examined by specialized and experienced doctors.
What is Revision Rhinoplasty Surgery?
In cases where people who have previously undergone rhinoplasty surgery are not satisfied with the result, rhinoplasty surgery is called “Revision rhinoplasty” after consulting with their physicians and after the physician deems it appropriate. Since the nose was intervened during previous surgeries, revision surgeries are more difficult than rhinoplasties performed for the first time.
What is Deviation (Nasal Curvature) Surgery?
Nasal curvature or deviation is seen in two forms. The type that concerns only the structures inside the nose is also seen. There is also a type that affects both internal and external structures and causes the appearance of curvature in the nose from the outside. This type of curvature can block the airway. However, nasal curvature does not always cause breathing problems. Insufficient oxygen intake causes the organs not to be nourished at the desired level. This situation, which also affects sleep patterns, causes deterioration in the quality of life by preventing people from resting. After the examination and taking into account the patient’s level of complaint, it is possible to obtain a better breathing and aesthetic appearance by correcting the curvatures present inside and outside.
What Should Be Considered Before Rhinoplasty Surgery?
Some medication restrictions are required before surgery. In addition, the rules applied in all general anesthesia operations apply to these operations. These rules are conveyed to the patient by the specialist doctor and health personnel.
How is Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty) Performed?
Rhinoplasty surgeries are performed under general anesthesia. It must be performed in the operating room under hospital conditions with appropriate equipment. Surgeries are performed with closed or open technique. The operation lasts between 1-3 hours.
After Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)
The patient stays in the hospital for one night as a precaution. In some cases, temporary bruising and swelling occur after nose surgery. However, this condition disappears after a certain period of time. If a tampon is placed, the tampon is removed after 2-4 days. The splints placed on the nose are removed on the 6th-8th days when bone healing is thought to be partially realized. If open rhinoplasty is performed, healing is seen by leaving a vague scar.
During the first few days, it is possible to see very slight leaks and mild congestion. In the first month, there may also be swelling in the nose that may slightly affect breathing due to edema due to surgery. This swelling is removed with medications recommended by the doctor.
The duration of postoperative return to work varies according to the technique of the surgery, the procedures performed, the patient’s healing potential, the patient’s job and the environment in which he/she lives. If patients who work at a desk do not care about the appearance of their nasal splints, they can go back to work on the fourth day. For people who work very actively, it is recommended to start working between 7-10 days.
Smoking negatively affects the healing process. Some external factors should also be taken into consideration during the treatment process. It should be protected from sunlight for 3 months. Since there is no incision after closed surgeries, there is no need to take extra protection against sunlight, but it should not be forgotten that protection from the sun is always important to prevent premature aging of the skin. Swimming, running and similar activities are restricted for certain periods depending on the procedures and technique. It is recommended to get separate information from the doctor about the use of contact lenses and glasses.
Complete recovery after rhinoplasty takes place after 3-6 months.
